Time for a brief break from posting ceramic animals to post some flesh & blood ones (see alt text for species!)!

My partner's mom & stepdad took us to Costa Rica (near Tamarindo) for his 40th birthday & I was in bird/creature heaven! The nearest rainforest was a bit too far from where we were staying, but I got to experience some wonderful dry tropical forest & estuary/river ecosystems, plus got some good hangout time with the Pacific ocean <3

My partner gave me the good DSLR for the nature tours we went on & it was a joy being able to take pretty OK photos instead of sad zoomed-in cheapest-iPhone ones (obviously I still have a lot to learn, but these are exciting as a beginning!!):

Since our two nature tours were boat-based (one on the Palo Verde River, one on an estuary in Las Baulas park), most of my decent bird photos are herons, as they're larger, generally lower-down, & also move more slowly than goddamn passerines/parrots/smaller birds.

I did get an ok-ish shot of a common black hawk, tho!! LOOK at that eagle-y beak!

& finally, the reptiles!! There were green iguanas & black spiny-tailed iguanas absolutely everywhere...

...AND WE SAW AMERICAN CROCODILES!!

On the Palo Verde river tour we saw some BIG guys (smallest maybe 6', biggest must have been 10'-12')!

& on the estuary tour we saw a few young ones. Two were less than 3' long, and this guy was maybe 4' and let us get super close b/c it was tucked away in the mangrove roots!

I had a wonderful time on this trip and am already looking forward to coming back for a rainforest-focused adventure next time!!

Also, Tamarindo has two really good coffee shops run by the loveliest people (Nordico Coffee & Derecho Sagrado) so if you're ever there, pls check them out!

August 6 - Sicao Green Tunnel, Anping Tree House, Tainan Confucius Temple, and Hayashi Department Store

We were told to meet today at 1pm, so I had the morning to myself. I decided to go try an Asian massage. I just got a foot massage, and the masseuse told me that she can tell I’m not sleeping well based on rubbing my feet. It was cool experiencing Eastern medicine. Then, we were off on the bus for our tour of Tainan, which is the oldest city in Taiwan. Our first stop was at the Sicao Green Tunnel, which is a river with mangrove canopies hanging over both sides. We got on the boat tour, and we could see a great temple from the river. They gave us life jackets and hats. The boat took us down and back this beautiful river. Then, we went straight to the Anping Tree House, which consists of trees growing on top of the ruins of a house. It all looked so interesting. The roots of the trees growing down the brick walls of this old house. There was another building on the premises with a gift shop and more educational exhibits, including Chinese calligraphy practice paper. After that, we went to Tainan Confucius Temple, which was similar to the one I went to on my own. It had a surrounding wall with multiple rooms and then a central building. Our last stop was at Hayashi Department Store, which is a super historic building in Tainan. It has this old-style elevator that I got to ride up to the top floor in. On the roof, I saw a traditional Japanese gate. We also went shopping there. Later on, I walked to a famous beef noodle restaurant in Tainan because Peter said Tainan is known for its fresh beef.

Academic Reflection:

Peter told us at the Sicao Green Tunnel that the mangroves can’t get as much oxygen from the saltwater, so part of their roots are above the water line. At Anping Tree House, I learned more about banyan trees, which are the trees that are growing on the ruins of this house. I also learned about the underground military shelter right next to the house.

At the Confucius temple, Peter taught us how to tell north and south Chinese architecture apart. The northern style architecture has a straight roof, while the southern one is curved. This temple had a curved roof, so we knew it came from a southern Chinese design. At the department store, Peter taught us about the elevator, and he said that the Japanese-style gate is similar to the one we saw across the street from the Confucius temple. He also said that the current president of Taiwan used to be the mayor of Tainan, and he led the charge to reopen this department store.

August 6 - Sicao Green Tunnel, Anping Tree House, Tainan Confucius Temple, and Hayashi Department Store

We had a lot of different places to go today, but despite that fact we didn’t actually get started until 1 in the afternoon. I spent my morning by joining some other people on a trip to a music store. I love to collect vinyl records, so I was interested in seeing what lps the store was going to have. They ended up having way more CDs than anything else, but it was still cool to look at what all they had. I ended up buying a Coldplay cd to give to my sister since its her favorite band. 

Eventually it was time to get on the bus and after a short drive we were at the Sicao Green Tunnel. Riding the boat down the tunnel reminded me so much of kayaking through Clam Bayou in Gulfport, Florida. Of course, this was much more stunning, but the vast amounts of mangroves and wildlife reminded me of the many mornings I’ve spent there. 

Our next stop was the Anping Tree House, which despite the name was not, in fact, a traditional tree house. Rather it was an old building that had been completely taken over by a tree and other wildlife. That combined with the rain created such a cool atmosphere to walk around. I really enjoyed the path that was built up above the building too.

Next on our speed run of tours was the Confucius Temple here in Tainan. It was really interesting to learn that it was the first Confucius temple in all of Taiwan. Additionally, it's also been dubbed as the first academy of Taiwan. We were able to walk around and check out the different rooms, one of which had a whole bunch of instruments. While we were walking around, Peter told us that this temple had a southern style. He asked us if we knew how to tell what was southern and what wasn’t, and since no one knew he told us it’s because northern style temples have much straighter and more rigid designs on the roof. 

The last stop of the day was the Hayashi Department Store. Peter pointed out that the reason the name Hayashi sounds a bit different from other building names in Taiwan is because it’s a Japanese name. I didn’t notice before he told us, but after he did I can’t believe I never realized. Inside the store was a whole bunch of interesting things, and although I was tempted I decided to try and save the rest of the cash I had. 

These final days of the trip I’ve been making sure to be extra mindful of everything I’ve been experiencing and learning. I want to take as much as I can back with me and hold onto it for the rest of my life. Today, the most impactful experience was just traveling around. I of course had a ton of fun with the group and singing karaoke on the bus, but I mean just physically going all around Tainan today. In the span of one afternoon we got to experience four different amazing things. In a couple of days I’ll be back home, and a week from now I’ll probably be in Gainesville. When I’m in either of those places, I won’t have these experiences anymore. Over these past four weeks I’ve learned so much not only about Taiwan, but the entire world. Today I just enjoyed being able to walk around the city and appreciate every detail and aspect of what it’s been like living in Taiwan. This trip has taught me about myself and what I want in life too. I hope one day I’ll be able to come back to Taiwan, as well as explore other parts of the world. I understand better now just how big and diverse it is, so I hope I can explore more soon.

Day 5 - May 1, Monday

Asis and I strolled to the nearby beach from our Airbnb at the crack of dawn, hopeful to catch the sunrise, but heavy clouds just covered it. We then decided to visit the not-so-secret Secret Beach (also known as Guiwan Beach) and spent an hour there, chilling. It was cool 'cause we had the whole place to ourselves – like we owned the beach. Afterward, we returned to freshen up and gathered our belongings for the land tour. We grabbed coffee and breakfast first in General Luna before hitting the road around 9 am; our destination was Del Carmen to visit Sugba Lagoon. However, we ended up making several stopovers because the scenery was just beautiful.

We opted for a private boat rental to ensure we could leave the lagoon whenever we wanted. Surprisingly, the boat journey to and from the lagoon ended up taking more time than our actual stay. I didn't mind, though, as I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. However, the place didn't live up to my expectations – no food stores or additional facilities, just a two-story floating hut with its infamous diving board and docks. The area was crowded with tourists, making it challenging to find a place to sit.

By around 2 pm, we arrived at Pacifico Beach, and let me tell you, the sight of the pristine blue sea and the waves was truly breathtaking. We enjoyed a late lunch in the area. Although we didn't take a swim, we just took in the moment. Later, we passed by Magpupungko, hoping we could see the tidal rock pools, but unfortunately, it was still high tide. We also made a stop at the Coconut Trees View Deck and snapped more photos. The weather was really unpredictable that day – from cloudy to sunny, and just when we were heading back home, it started raining, only to clear up again. To top off our adventurous land trip, a rainbow appeared just as we approached our Airbnb!

Taking a breather before heading out again for dinner in General Luna, we couldn't help but notice a drastic change in our skin color – we were pretty much toasted! Anyway, at 6 pm, we grabbed coffee again and then headed to a Thai restaurant for dinner. Afterward, we returned to the secret beach because earlier in the day, we had spoken to one of the local boatmen who suggested checking out the bioluminescent plankton and fireflies at night. Despite feeling tired from the earlier land trip, we were determined to push through. Honestly, the idea of a boat tour at night had me feeling uneasy. Navigating through the darkness, moving away from the shore, and getting closer to the mangroves — it was downright terrifying. Bahala na.

There were three of us in this small boat. As Kuya shared stories and rowed closer to the mangroves, we spotted a few fireflies. It took a moment for our eyes to adjust to the darkness, but soon enough, we could see plenty of them. To catch a better glimpse of them, you needed to move even closer to the mangroves. But nope, Asis and I were good, so we didn't go further. Kuya also tried to show us the bioluminescent plankton, but there were so few that I had a hard time seeing them. He mentioned it wasn't the best time to view them due to the frequent rain during our stay. So yuuup, we headed back to the shore after 30 minutes because it was getting chilly, and we could hear thunder approaching.

It turned out to be quite an adventure, a unique way to kick off the first day of May – an exhausting yet unforgettable journey. Definitely one for the books.

Playa Blanca & Raccoon Island

I woke up well rested and enjoyed my bocaqueso, a pastry with cheese and guava jam inside, on the hostel rooftop enjoying the city view. Another guest came up brushing his teeth, I wondered where he would spit - in the pool? There were about a million people milling around the cafe where I was meeting my tour guide for today’s adventure to Playa Blanca but somehow my tour guide Kimberly managed to find me as the one gringo amongst them all. She put me on a full bus where I hobbled to the back and sat next to the window. We made it to Playa Blanca in about an hour and after descending a steep rocky path everyone was separated to their guides for the day. I took off my boot to wade into the water and climb into the boat. It was overloaded with people and I ended up sitting in the front without the sun shade over me. I took a child’s life jacket to wear as it was the only one left as we started to drive over to another part of the beach to collect our guide, Chocolate, where he was swimming with his GoPro. I was told rather rudely to take off the child’s life jacket but they did give me an adult sized one. We drove out about 5 minutes and everyone was invited to jump in and snorkel (funny they called it snorkelling because there were no snorkels, only masks). I stayed in the boat as it looked very difficult to climb back in, which I'd have to do with only one foot. I sat with a severely overheating dog panting frantically that I wanted to hoist up by the harness and throw in to daddy. After the brief snorkel session we took the boat through the mangrove area where we drove alongside an area full of (malnourished) raccoons that climbed out on the branches to the boat to eat squished banana from our hands or grab it with their little hands and scurry away. We stopped at a small island for photos and then we were left on the beach at Playa Blanca. I sat down to put my boot back on and by the time I was done I couldn’t see anyone I recognised. Some guys came over, presumably to try and make me pay for the 5 minutes I was sitting at their beach table so I ignored them and walked away. They wouldn’t let me get away and were trying to get me into a boat to go to a restaurant on another island. I began to panic as I didn’t really know where I was so I tried to ditch these ‘carpers’ and go to a hostel I’d seen a sign for, hoping for wifi. The hostel owner wanted me to pay for a room which I kept insisting I don’t want, as it turned out they didn’t even have wifi there and he was piggy backing on one of the nearby networks. He walked me to the specific bar so the signal would work and demanded a tip for his service which I gave him once it connected and I was able to call the tour company for help. I waited outside this bar for a while but decided to go and get a drink so I could sit away from all the people trying to sell me bracelets, oysters, and other crap. Of course as soon as I had ordered a drink, Kimberly showed up. I got my cocktail to go and followed her to get my lunch of pork, rice, and plantains. It was decent food however I did not want to get a closer look at the kitchen... Kimberly shouted out for the group to assemble and in the time it took me to shake out my towel and put it in my bag, she was nowhere to be seen. I followed some other people I recognised from our bus and took my exact same seat although the bus was only half full going back. I never saw Kimberly again but the driver was destined for Cartagena. He drove through the old town, Getsemaní, and then all the way out to Bocagrande before heading to the airport. I must've missed my stop so the driver let me out and pointed me the way to walk. It was a nice walk back through Getsemaní though and I saw some dancers in Plaza de la Trinidad. I bought an empanada from a little stall but yet again I got ripped off. At the hostel I ended up chatting with the Peruvian girls Ana and Mili and we established that it was my birthday tomorrow and Ana’s the following day so they decided to join my sunset catamaran cruise tomorrow and I was stoked to have the company!

Today I had my first Lauds with my community. In case you don't know what I mean, I belong to a church group with my grandparents in which we hold Masses, Eucharist and celebrations in our own way

I used to go as a guest since I was still too young to be part of a community , but a month ago I was finally able to take the next step and become a "sister" in the community

Since we were celebrating Pentecost, my community decided to do it in an area where there is a beach, in the house of a brother who belonged to it. So that's what we did

After finishing celebrating and having a snack, we decided to take a tour of the beaches and mangroves, as well as visit the "Crocodile Island". Although I have to admit that I was dying and scared because the boat was moving with the slightest movement and we thought we were going to fall. Luckily nothing happened and we enjoyed it.

I don't usually go on vacation or spend my last day of it going out somewhere, I've hardly ever done it, so I'm really happy. It feels good to spend the last day of your vacation with people and have fun, but don't think I just went for that, the trip wasn't planned, we were supposed to go to do the word (mass), eat and come back, but it wasn't like that

It helped me a lot to relax, and to lose some fear for tomorrow, since my psychological tests are coming up and I was nervous, but now I'm happy
